About
Zack
Teo Zhen Yi (Zack) is a pianist and pedagogue whose artistry is distinguished by its vocal quality, poetic sensibility, and refined touch at the keyboard. Originally aspiring to pursue vocal studies, his early affinity for singing has profoundly shaped his approach to the piano, resulting in performances that are deeply human, characterful, and expressive, with phrasing that breathes and sings.
Zhen Yi holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from LASALLE College of the Arts, where he studied under the tutelage of Benjamin Loh. His musical development has been further enriched through masterclasses with distinguished artists and pedagogues including Jacques Rouvier, Lucas Blondeel, Björn Lehmann, Peter Takács, Xiting Yang, Ko Iwasaki, Svetlana Transky, Yejin Noh, Ornela Ervin, and Richard Ormrod.
As a performer, Zhen Yi has appeared in recital across the United States, Europe, and Asia, with performances at notable venues including Prugio Art Hall, the Universität der Künste Konzertsaal, and the Steinway Gallery ION Orchard. In addition to solo performance, he has been actively involved in chamber music collaborations with fellow musicians—experiences that have further shaped his musical listening, flexibility, and sense of artistic dialogue. His repertoire spans solo piano works across stylistic periods, approached with sensitivity to sound, structure, and musical narrative.
Alongside his performing life, Zhen Yi is a dedicated piano educator, teaching students from beginner to advanced levels. His teaching philosophy centres on a holistic understanding of piano playing—encompassing musical intention, physical movement, technical clarity, the learning process, and performance psychology. Through a highly pedagogical approach, he guides students toward refined physical awareness at the instrument while respecting individual emotional perspectives and modes of understanding. His lessons often evolve into reflective spaces that deepen students’ musical insight, artistic sensitivity, and self-awareness.
Zhen Yi is also active in the international music community as a faculty member of the OpusOne International Music Festival, where he works alongside distinguished artists including James Anagnoson, Greg Anderson, and Dmitry Rachmanov. In addition, he serves as Co-Director of International Association of Professional Music Teachers (IAPMT) Singapore, where he helps lead initiatives that promote artistic exchange and performance opportunities for young musicians. As part of this role, he oversees the organisation of the IAPMT Singapore Piano Competition, an international platform that welcomes participants of diverse ages, nationalities, and artistic backgrounds.
